| Harriet Miller was
a pioneering feminist and true role model for several generations of
young women, many of whom are members of SBWPC. Soon after she
completed college, she was the first woman chemist hired by Atlantic
Richfield. She returned to school, earning a Ph.D. and serving as
Dean of Women. Harriet held many high visibility offices,
including serving as State Superintendent of Schools in Montana and
Director of AARP, in Washington, D.C. before she 'retired' to Santa
Barbara, where in her mid sixties, she got involved in local politics,
serving as Councilmember and Mayor, and serving on a number of
non-profit boards and commissions. Santa Barbara is a better
place for her leadership. She also was a most wonderful friend.
We will miss her.
